In honor of Malbec World Day, here are a few fun facts about one of our favorite grapes:

  • When tasting Malbec, you’ll mostly find dark fruit flavors of blackberry, black cherry and plum. Secondary flavors of violet and chocolate are also common.
  • Malbec is a very dark grape with a thin skin. It is a distant relative of Merlot, this means that the Malbec grape is sensitive to pests, rot and frost. It thrives in sunny, dry conditions.
  • Many people believe Malbec requires a lot of oak aging because of its rich, bold flavors. Actually, most Argentine Malbecs have been aged for on oak for only about 6 months.
  • Argentina grows the most Malbec grapes in the world, growing over 75% of all the acres in the world. Now, Malbec grows in seven countries and continues to become even more popular.
  • Unique to Malbec is that in the wine glass, you’ll often find a magenta, or hot pink rim.

Mark your calendars for April 17 for a very happy Malbec World Day!
