Dark & Dreamy Reds & Reads

Dark and Dreamy Red Wines and Books for National Book Day

Over the past year, we’ve been doing our best to keep up with our book clubs over virtual meetings and at park picnics. We can’t wait to get back together with our friends in cozy living rooms to discuss the ins and outs of gorgeous stories over shared bottles of wine.

This Friday is World Book Day and we’re back with the Wine Sisterhood Book Club, spring 2021 edition. Lately, we’ve been finding inspiration in wines like Tall Dark Stranger and Girl & Dragon to seek out books that offer an escape into dark and dreamy worlds in far away times and places.

With the help of our team, we created this list of fantastical stories and wine pairings that will have you staying up late to read “just one more chapter.”

What books are on your reading list this season? What should we add to our list? Tell us in a comment at the end of this post.

“After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find—her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.”

“Esther is a stowaway. She’s hidden herself away in the Librarian’s book wagon in an attempt to escape the marriage her father has arranged for her–a marriage to the man who was previously engaged to her best friend. Her best friend who she was in love with. Her best friend who was just executed for possession of resistance propaganda.”

Girl & Dragon Malbec paired with The Power by Naomi Alderman

The Power by Naomi Alderman

Suggested wine pairing: Girl & Dragon Malbec

(Find near you or shop online)

“In The Power the world is a recognisable place: there’s a rich Nigerian kid who lounges around the family pool; a foster girl whose religious parents hide their true nature; a local American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family. But something vital has changed, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power – they can cause agonising pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world changes utterly.”

The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa

Suggested wine pairing: Girl & Dragon Cabernet Sauvignon

(Find near you or shop online)

“On an unnamed island off an unnamed coast, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses—until things become much more serious. Most of the island’s inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few imbued with the power to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten.”
