Oscar Best Actress Nominees and Wine Pairings 2019

Are you ready for the glitz and glamour of the 91st Academy Awards this weekend? We’re preparing to cheer on our favorite leading ladies on the big screen with a few of our own from our wine fridge.

Toast to this year’s Best Actresses with a fantastic wine pairing below!

“And the Oscar goes to…”

Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma” with Girl & Dragon Malbec

Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio) is a housekeeper working for a wealthy family. She spends her days tending to their four children, taking care of the dogs, and cleaning the house. “Roma” chronicles a tumultuous year in the family’s life in Mexico City in the early 1970s. (IMDB)

Traditional, but fierce, we think Girl & Dargon Malbec would pair beautifully with Yalitza Aparicio’s Best Actress nomination for her character in “Roma.”

Glenn Close, “The Wife” with Middle Sister Rebel Red

Joan Castleman (Glenn Close) is the perfect devoted wife. Forty years spent sacrificing her own talent, dreams and ambitions to fan the flames of her charismatic husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) and his skyrocketing literary career. Ignoring his infidelities and excuses because of his “art” with grace and humor. Their fateful pact has built a marriage upon uneven compromises and Joan’s reached her breaking point. On the eve of Joe’s Nobel Prize for Literature, the crown jewel in a spectacular body of work, Joan’s coup de grace is to confront the biggest sacrifice of her life and secret of his career. (IMDB)

We’d pair Glen Close’s character in “The Wife” with Middle Sister Rebel Red, because there’s a little rebel in all of us, even if she takes years to come out.

Olivia Colman, “The Favourite” with Middle Sister Sweet & Sassy Moscato

In early 18th century England, a troubled Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah and the Queen. (IMDB)

A little sweet with whole lot of sass, Olivia’s portrayal of Queen Ann would pair beautifully with Middle Sister Sweet & Sassy Moscato.

Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born” with Girl & Dragon Cabernet Sauvignon

Seasoned musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) discovers-and falls in love with-struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer – until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons. (IMDB)

Like Gaga’s character in “A Star Is Born,” the bold and powerful qualities of Girl & Dragon Cabernet Sauvignon will steal the stage.

Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” with Girl & Dragon Pinot Grigio

Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) made her living in the 1970’s and 80’s profiling the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estee Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. When Lee is no longer able to get published because she has fallen out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend Jack (Richard E. Grant). An adaptation of the memoir “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” relays the true story of the best-selling celebrity biographer (and friend to cats). (IMDB)

Girl & Dragon Pinot Grigio speaks to the adventurous and daring qualities of McCarthy’s risk-taking character in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
