Bar Dog Homemade Dog Treat Recipes

What can we say? We love spoiling our furry roommates. Spoiling them with homemade, healthful treats is an indulgence we love to share.

We’ve made Peanut Butter, Cheesy and Pumpkin Bacon dog treats to share with our four-legged besties while we’re sipping Bar Dog wine. We encourage Bar Dog consumption *while making* the treats. As you know, wine ain’t for dogs and dogs ain’t for wine.

Bar Dog Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Peanut Butter Dog Treats

This Peanut Butter Dog Treat recipe from Erin McDowell at Food 52 is one of our test pooch’s favorites. Healthful, good smelling, and natural, these dog treats for the good boy and good girl who deserve all the unconditional love.

Makes 3 dozen medium biscuits

Ingredients
½ cup natural, unsalted peanut butter
1 cup water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or use the oil that has separated from the natural peanut butter inside the jar)
1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Directions
Preheat the oven to 350º F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the peanut butter, water, and oil. Add the flours gradually, mixing until the mixture comes together to form a smooth dough, 2 to 3 minutes. (This can also be done by hand, though the kneading will take longer — 6 to 8 minutes.) Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thick. Cut out biscuits using a floured cookie cutter, and transfer to the prepared baking sheets. Leave at least 1/4 inch between each biscuit to ensure even baking (the biscuits don’t spread much). Bake until golden brown on the bottom and edges, about 12 to 18 minutes (depending on the size of the cookie cutter). Cool completely before serving to your pooch.

Cheesy Bones

These four ingredient cheese bones are a dog’s dream treat. Mixed with only whole wheat flour, water, oil and cheese, you’ll feel secure knowing these ingredients are good for you. We cut these Cheesy Bones into a big and a little size for flexible treating. You never know how much of a good boy or girl you might be.

Bake the cheesy treats for about 2- 2 1/2 hours in a 250 degrees oven until thoroughly dry and crunchy. Cool on the pan and store for up to a week.

Bacon Pumpkin Dog Snacks

These treats are chock full of fiber and great taste due to the pooch-friendly pumpkin bacon combo. Here, we used a tiny round cookie cutter to keep the calories down and the opportunities for treating high.

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add bacon and cook for 6 minutes or until crispy set aside, reserving excess fat. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat pumpkin puree, eggs and bacon fat on medium-high until well mixed, about 1-2 minutes. Add the old fashioned oats and 2 1/2 cups flour at low speed, beating just until mixed through. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky. Add bacon, beating just until incorporated.

Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using a small, round cookie cutter, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet. Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Let cool on the pan and share with your pooch for up to a week.
