In 1967 more than 100,000 people came together at Haight-Ashbury, a neighborhood in San Francisco. The movement was named the Summer of Love.

The hippie counterculture was in full swing, with radical political ideals, love of music and artistic social expression.

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco”. This famous quote is attributed to Mark Twain but he never really said it. In any event, summer in San Francisco can be ridiculously cold and foggy. A warm serape or suede coat was a must.

The Human Be-In free concert in Golden Gate Park was the prelude to the Summer of Love and introduced the word “psychedelic” to suburbia.
