Grape to Glass: Bud Break

Grape to Glass: Bud Break

“Wine is sunlight, held together by water.” – Galileo Galilei

Before harvest time arrives in California and other wine growing regions around the world, the grapevines that produce our favorite wines must work their way from season to season. Within each of those seasons, new and exciting changes happen to the vine and later to the fruit.

Our graphic below helps explain each phase of the grape-growing process: from grape to glass. Last month, we told you all about rootstock. Today we bring you, bud break, the next step in the vineyard magic phase.

We’ll present a different step in the process each month!

Next up: Bud Break

The timing of bud break is determined by location, temperature and the type of grape. Bud break happens earlier in warmer climates.

The grapevine remains dormant until the tiny, tender buds emerge. Bud break occurs when the tiny buds on each grapevine grow bigger.

Next: Flowering!

Until then, you can go back to where it all begins, with rootstock.
