Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction in both Nevada and California and is home to a number of ski resorts, summer outdoor recreation, and tourist attractions.  This exquisitely beautiful body of water has earned the name “The Blue World” for its crystal-clear depths that reflect the color of the sky. Most people are familiar with the glitz and glam of the Casinos in South Shore, which is located in Nevada.  But, if you want to experience the “Original Tahoe,” check out the West Shore on the California side; what locals call “The Best Shore.”

Where to Stay

Quaint:  The Cottage Inn (Tahoe City, CA) – Located two miles south of Tahoe City on Highway 89, The Cottage Inn sits next door to Sunnyside Resort on one of the finest private beaches on the lake.  The original residence was built in 1938 and is decorated in the “Old Tahoe” style.  Each cottage features original knotty pine paneling and sports a unique theme and charm.  Both Breakfast and a Wine & Cheese Hour are included in the room rate.

Fancy Pants:  Resort at Squaw Creek (Between Truckee and Tahoe City) – Ideally situated at the base of Squaw Valley, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics.  The resort provides miles of hiking and biking trails, crystal-clear mountain streams for fishing, and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation and relaxation.  The only reason to leave the property is to visit the lake 5 miles away. 

Camping:  Sugar Pine Point State Park (Tahoma, CA) – One of three beautiful and popular state parks on the West Shore.  175 sites for tents or RV’s, drinking water, shower facilities and restrooms.  Visit the Tahoma Market “PDQ” for forgotten provisions and treats!

Get Busy!!!

Best Spot for Picnic Lunch:  Grab a sandwich at PDQ “Tahoma Market” and make your way to the picnic tables at Hurricane Bay.  Free lakeside dining at its best!

Best Beach for a “Day at the Beach”:  Meeks Bay the perfect spot for Paddle boarding, Kayaking, or just reading a book – the view of the bay will take your breath away.

Favorite Hike:  Bliss State Park to Emerald Bay

You’ve Played Hard, Now Time to Indulge

Chamber’s Punch at Chamber’s Landing (Tahoma, CA)  – A long pier, a shack, and a punch that will knock your socks off!

Mai Tai at Sunnyside Resort – A Tahoe landmark since the 1950’s.  Try and get a seat on the deck and enjoy the view.

For an adventure, take a water taxi from Obexer’s in Homewood to Gar Woods on the North Shore.  Choose from a selection of their world famous “Wet Woody’s.”  Wet Woody Warning – these pack a big punch!

Dinner Time

Casual:  The Bridgetender (Tahoe City, CA) –Take a seat by the Truckee River and order classic American dishes like Cheeseburgers and Fish Tacos.  15 Beers on Tap and definitely the best Bloody Mary on the entire lake!

Fancy Pants: Dining with a lake view at Christy Hill or Wolfdale’s in Tahoe City.  Both restaurants feature fresh California cuisine and world-class wine lists.

Authentic Tahoe: Swiss Lakewood Restaurant (Homewood, CA) – A West Shore institution for over 55 years!  Old-school menu items like Weinerschnitzel, Veal Emincee, and Pepper Steak.

The West Shore of Lake Tahoe is a place of “old school” charm, with endless opportunities for outdoor activities and relaxation.  It is the perfect place to spend a weekend now, next summer, or some day in the future.
