Saturday Football Spirit: Haute Dogs, Crafty Treats & Games

Wines Women Love - Haute Dogs

It’s week two of our tailgating series and we’re having fun with a traditional tailgating favorite – the hot dog. We’re also sharing a delectable dessert idea to whip up with your team’s colors and a game that will keep the competition going in the backyard.

You can find all of these ideas and more each week on our “It’s Tailgating Time” Pinterest Board. Check back throughout the month for new pins!

Fancy Franks

From Kosher beef to bratwurst and everything in between, there’s something for everyone when it comes to this tasty grilled treat. But don’t go reaching for those same old, plain Jane franks. This season, feed your friends “Haute” Dogs!

We’ve put together the printable grid below to illustrate how simple it is to get creative and serve up some game-winning Haute Dogs. Download the printable PDF.

Dive into Dessert

Every tailgating party needs something sweet. It’s a rule. At least, now it is! We found this Tailgate Trifle at South Your Mouth that can be tailored to your favorite team. Just switch up the fruit fillings and you’re good to go!

Here are filling ideas to fit the team you’re cheering on from Mandy at South Your Mouth:

  • Blue – Blueberry
  • Red – Cherry
  • Purple – Blackberry
  • Garnet/Burgundy – Dark Cherry
  • Gold/Yellow – Pineapple
  • Orange – Peach

If you’re looking for a chocolatey treat, try our Deep Purple Cinnamon Brownie Bites. Great for nibbling with a glass of Deep Purple Zinfandel!

Ingredients:

6 T. Butter
2 T. Deep Purple Zinfandel
1/4 C. Unsweetened cocoa
6 oz. Good quality semi-sweet chocolate
1/4 C. Hershey’s syrup
3/4 C. Unbleached flour
1/4 t. baking powder
1 1/2 t. cinnamon
1 C. Granulated sugar
2 Large eggs
3 t. Pure vanilla extract

1.  Preheat oven to 340 degrees.  Line an 8″ x 8″ pan with parchment paper and spray with non stick spray.

2.  Bring wine and butter to a low simmer over medium heat.  Remove from direct heat and add the semi sweet chocolate and cocoa powder.  Stir until mixture is melted.  Let cool slightly.

3.  Put sugar, eggs and vanilla in the bowl of electric mixer and beat on medium speed until pale, about 4 minutes.  Add chocolate mixture.  Add flour, baking powder and cinnamon.  Beat, scraping sides of bowl until well incorporated – don’t over mix.  Fold in with a spatula the Hershey’s syrup.

4.  Pour batter into prepared pan.  Bake until a cake tester inserted into brownies comes out with a few crumbs but is not wet, about 25 minutes.  Let cool completely.  Yields about 9 large or 16 small brownies.

We cut them into tiny mini bites. Optional:  Sprinkle mini chocolate chips on the top before baking!

Crafty Competition

No need to worry about keeping your guests busy before kickoff when you have a game of bean-bag toss set up. Sometimes called corn toss or corn hole, this simple game may have your friends competing well after the final whistle.

At it’s most simple level, points are gained by tossing a small bean bag into the hole on the wooden board. To make it official, you can check out the American Cornhole Association’s (yes, this exists) rules and regulations.

If you’re handy enough, making a game of your own is completely do-able, but will involve some power tools. We’ve found pre-made and decorated games online, like this one from Style My Corntoss on Etsy, that have done all the hard work for you.

Wherever your tailgating takes you this season, we hope the food is delicious, your team is winning and you’re in the company of fabulous friends. Don’t forget to check our tailgating Pinterest Board for more ideas to keep your game day festive and fun!
